Kickstarter campaign hopes to create winemaking industry in Northern Nevada
A Kickstarter campaign has started to expand and promote vineyards and winemaking in Northern Nevada. Check it here.
The goal is to raise $25,500 by Jan. 1 in order to fund the planting of a third acre for 1,500 Chardonnay vines, a trellis system, and an additional 400 gallons of tankage. The project involves Nevada Vines & Wines and the University of Nevada, Reno. Donations are eligible for tax deduction. This is an excerpt from the Kickstarter page:
Success is Highly Probable
Thirteen varietals of 90 vines each have been maintained successfully at UNR’s experimental vineyard on Valley Road since 1995. It’s time to expand to commercial-scale to pave the way for a viable wine industry in Nevada. Wine made from the grapes from the Valley Road vineyards are tasted twice monthly at the Valley Road Greenhouse (seewww.nevadavinesandwines.com) and donors are welcome from anywhere. The proposed 3-acre vineyard will produce 10 to 15 tons and make upwards of 2000 cases. At completion, 7 acres will produce 20 to 35 tons. The wine biz will be on!
It is a common misconception that Nevada’s climate is not suitable for wine grapes. This is just not true as has been proven at Valley Road for over 16 years. NV&W staff are learning and researching techniques for cold weather husbandry. Further support may be found in a direct comparison to Washington State’s wine industry that supports an $8 billion wine industry and has a very similar climate to Northern Nevada. Why You Should Invest In Nevada Vines & Wines
This is a very good business proposition. It creates jobs, lots of jobs, one for every 1.3 acres planted or 30,000 in Washington State. According to the Huffington Post of 11/4/13 world wine production is not keeping pace with demand. Nevada is a business friendly environment with its “no income tax” position and has the perfect tourist environment on which to develop the ambiance of wine and vineyards. It is tax efficient since 100 percent of NV&W income is tax free. As a donor you are eligible for a tax deduction, multiplying your investment. Finally, your investment will help us achieve a life goal, ranking right after earning our PhD’s. We want to make a difference in our Nevada and US economies.
